Space Camp Fundraiser: REALLY GROVELING HERE!

Update III:

Apparently, we didn't break the website after all (phew, not my fault!) The site went down due to a power outage at the data center that hosted it, which affected thousands of other sites.

At any rate, the good news is that we are halfway to goal! Since the treasurer's report at the beginning of the meeting on Sunday, saying that we owed $7,300, the group took in $1,800 in funds from parents finishing paying their pledges and turning in checks from donors and from pizza coupon and candy sales.

The next news is this: PayPal has taken in $2,000 for us since yesterday afternoon, due largely, I think, to this post, and the people who linked to it. Boy, I have a lot of friends. And they, in turn have a lot of friends. And those friends are kind and generous people.

This means we still have $3,500 to go. They were hoping to raise about $3,200 at the last fundraiser, so it looks as though we are really going make it! Thank you all so much!

Update II:

Yes, the site is down. If you would still like to donate now, go to PayPal directly, and then donate to the e-mail My elves tell me that will allow you to continue donating, although the site is down. You can mention in the memo line that you are making the donation on behalf of/in honor of Delia (that way they know the contribution came in as a result of this post, which helps them to track things)--but remember, the fundraising is for the group as a whole and so it goes to help all the other kids, too. Delia does not get to go unless all the other kids go, too.

[You folks rock. Um . . . I hope the nice people at won't be mad that between us all we seem to have broken the site...] I have called one of the coordinators of the program to let them know, and I have asked them to get back to me and give me an idea of how we are doing on the fundraising, so I can report back to you.

Update to this post:

The site seems to be down temporarily. The response to this appeal has been so extraordinary, I wonder if we have exceeded bandwidth? Or maybe even crashed the site??? (oh dear, oh dear...) I will try to find out and keep you posted. Um . . . I think we had better hold off for the time being.

Original post:

This is very un-Lutheran of me, but I am throwing all pride to the winds and begging as hard as I can: please please please help make it possible for Delia and 45 other children to go to Space Camp.

We had a meeting today and the news is grim: we still have $7,300 dollars to raise of the $64,500 total, we have just one more fundraiser coming up which will probably not raise it all, and the kids are leaving in just nineteen days. If you have contributed already, many many thanks! I know that quite a few of you have. If you have been meaning to contribute and just haven't gotten around to it, we need money NOW. Here once again is Delia's letter to you, asking for your support.

To see Delia's handwritten appeal, click here. Your contributions are tax-deductible.

Ah, you maybe couldn't read that, could you? Click here to see the information typed out for you.

*winces and yet lays it on stupifyingly thick* Look at that adorable little girl over there in the icon. Isn't she sweet? Aren't those dimples something? Won't you help make her dream come true? She has glue all over her fingers from gluing together balsa wood airplanes! She has made hot air balloons out of tissue paper! She'll shoot off rockets in your honor!

Speed is of essence now (we are past due on a payment that Space Camp should have received by now). You can send a check to the P.O. Box mentioned in the letter, but EVEN BETTER would be if you have a PayPal account and would be willing to contribute that way RIGHT NOW I MEAN THIS MINUTE, you can donate at the Reach for the Stars website, using the PayPal button, which you can access here. You can mention in the memo line that you are making the donation on behalf of Delia. If you don't have a PayPal account, you can still donate, using a credit card. Click the PayPal button at the link above, and then you can choose the option "If you do not currently have a PayPal account, click here."

For everyone on my friends list and my friends-of-friends list, as well as anyone reading this syndicated on blogger, MySpace and anywhere else on God's Green Earth, I would be so grateful if you would pimp this on your own journals (YES, I AM AN ABSOLUTELY BRAZEN SHAMELESS HUSSY.) For the locals: we have one more upcoming fundraiser: there will be a bake sale, rummage sale and car wash on Saturday, May 6 at Ramsey Fine Arts Elementary School 1 West 49th Street, Minneapolis, from 7 a.m. to 4 p.m. Bring your dirty car and a healthy appetite for baked goodies and lots and lots of money and we will be ever so touchingly grateful.

Thank you.

Edited to add: The site seems to be down temporarily. The response has been so good, I wonder if we have exceeded bandwidth? I will try to find out and keep you posted.

I didn't send a lot, but Pay Pal made it much, much easier since I'm not in the US! I didn't write it in the memo line, but it's in the Payment For line -- I typed in Delia Kerr. I hope that works!

Every little bit helps! Thank you!
23rd-Apr-2006 10:51 pm (UTC)
I put that too, but you know, so long as it helps the group I'm happy.

I am still willing to contribute that dragon feather bookmark to the sale, if it will help. Just let me know who is collecting these things/how to contact.
23rd-Apr-2006 11:31 pm (UTC)
Did that go with the auction that minnehaha was arranging? If not, I can pick it up. Thank you! Let me know.
23rd-Apr-2006 11:05 pm (UTC)
Done! Best wishes to Delia and the others.
23rd-Apr-2006 11:29 pm (UTC)
Thank you!

It's not much, but my husband and I just donated through Paypal, with Delia's name in the subject heading.

Here is a prayer I thought you might like.

Being Dependent

When Jesus came to earth as a baby,
He depended entirely on human love -
That of Mary, Joseph, and the shepherds.
When Jesus preached and healed,
He depended entirely on love -
The alms given by those who heard him.
I too depend on human love.
The kindness of others sustains my soul.
The gifts of others sustain my body.
Every person depends on others' love.
Let no one be ashamed of their needs.
To depend on others is to imitate Christ.

- a Celtic prayer

Thank you! Lovely prayer.

Ten bucks and a pimping is the best I can do.
Good luck to her, though :)
23rd-Apr-2006 11:28 pm (UTC)
Ten bucks is great, and pimping on your journal is golden. Thank you!

I wanted desperately to go to Space Camp when I was young -- I had ambitions of being the first woman to set foot on Mars. While that hasn't happened (I toil in an office much like yours to fund my MLS) I still regret that my parents could not send me. And sometimes I wonder how different things would be if I had gone.

Anyway. It's that memory that sent me to Paypal. It wasn't much of a donation, all I have to spare at the moment, but I hope it helps. I will be pimping this out as well, and I hope that it helps enough.

Best of luck to Delia and her comrades, and I hope we will get a full report of her trip!

Thank you so much. People have been terrific about spreading the word, and I'm much more hopeful now than I was this afternoon.
23rd-Apr-2006 11:46 pm (UTC)
Done, and I'll pimp as well. (How can I not support Space Camp, when I grew up watching shuttle launches?) I hope she and the others meet the fundraising goal and have a wonderful time.
23rd-Apr-2006 11:47 pm (UTC)
Got to double check the finances, but something should be headed that way asap. And, pimping in the journal, done :).

24th-Apr-2006 03:58 am (UTC)
Thanks so much! Spreading the word really helps!

A little bit from tigergladys and I.

Reach for the stars Delia...
24th-Apr-2006 04:00 am (UTC)
Many thanks to you both!
23rd-Apr-2006 11:53 pm (UTC)
$20 sent and I promoted this in my journal, though I don't have many readers. Good luck!
24th-Apr-2006 12:08 am (UTC)
Swinging by (on a star) from peacockharpy's post -- sent in a small offering via PayPal.

Best of luck to the whole crew!
24th-Apr-2006 12:20 am (UTC) - good luck!
Sternel pimped out your request on her LJ, and I kicked in 10 bucks...good luck, good luck.

I really wanted to do space camp too when I was little...but as one of five kids, it was never going to happen! Good luck to Delia! Hope you all make it!
24th-Apr-2006 12:58 am (UTC) - Re: good luck!
Thank you so much! You are welcome to post about it in your own journal, too, if you like! (Yes, I am shameless.)
24th-Apr-2006 12:29 am (UTC)
$25 from the Weaselden. Best of luck!
24th-Apr-2006 12:58 am (UTC)
Thank you!
24th-Apr-2006 12:40 am (UTC)
One contribution via paypal, just confirmed.
24th-Apr-2006 12:46 am (UTC)
We don't have much to give right now, but I always wanted to go to Space Camp when I was little. Go, Delia, go!

Thank you! She is really excited to go.
24th-Apr-2006 12:55 am (UTC)
I just contributed via Paypal. My cousin Anne went to Space Camp a few years back and loved it, so I really hope this works out for Delia and the other kids.

(Wish I lived closer and could come to the car wash - my car could use it!)
24th-Apr-2006 12:59 am (UTC)
Thank you so much!
24th-Apr-2006 01:24 am (UTC)
cmpriest pimped and I answered the call.

I don't need a new hat, but Delia needs to go to Space Camp.
Not sure if my pimpage will help, but I put out the word to my friendslist.

Best of luck!
24th-Apr-2006 02:06 am (UTC)
Thank you so very much!
24th-Apr-2006 01:57 am (UTC)
I'm an Ole grad and saw this appeal on the St. Olaf community and figured why not - I got to do the things I loved as a child as a result of the support and sacrifice of others. Bear in mind that I'm a WAY recent grad and current grad student and I eat a loooot of Ramen, so it's a small amount, but every little bit counts, eh?
24th-Apr-2006 02:05 am (UTC)
Yes, indeed! Thank you so very much. I am particularly grateful since money is tight for you right now. We really appreciate it!
24th-Apr-2006 02:22 am (UTC)
I donated $25, but I wish I could have donated the remaining balance.

As someone who grew up and currently lives minutes away from KSC in Titusville, I completely understand the thrill of being able to attend Space Camp. Good luck with your fundraisers and I sincerely hope that enough money will be raised for all of the children to attend.
24th-Apr-2006 02:27 am (UTC)
Thank you, thank you! People have been been great in responding to this appeal, and I am more hopeful than I was this afternoon. Every bit helps.
24th-Apr-2006 02:33 am (UTC)
PayPal despises me, but I managed to get something through. Because I wanted to go to Space Camp when I her age.
24th-Apr-2006 02:38 am (UTC)
Thank you so very much!
24th-Apr-2006 02:36 am (UTC) - <lj user="wicked_wish">'s pimpage is working...
...because I kicked in some change via PayPal. (PayPal is our friend, isn't it?)

Good luck for you and yours!
24th-Apr-2006 02:39 am (UTC) - Re: <lj user="wicked_wish">'s pimpage is working...
I am really grateful to everyone for helping to spread the word. Thank you!
24th-Apr-2006 02:59 am (UTC)
Another Paypal donation coming Delia's way. Go girl go!
24th-Apr-2006 03:06 am (UTC)
Wish I could help, but as you might be able to guess if you read my LJ, this is _not_ a good time. :-)
